A theatre in Tennessee has cancelled its long-running screening of iconic Hollywood film Gone with the Wind over complaints of racism.

The Orpheum Theatre in Memphis has announced the classic 1939 film will not be part of its 2018 summer movie series.

The theatre received complaints after a screening of the film took place the night before the white supremacist "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, which left a woman dead.

Gone with the Wind has been criticised for its romanticised portrayal of slavery on a Southern plantation.

President Brett Batterson told the New York Times the theatre had "carefully reviewed" every comment and complaint it received after the screening.

"As an organization whose stated mission is to 'entertain, educate and enlighten the communities it serves', the Orpheum cannot show a film that is insensitive to a large segment of its local population."

The theatre's decision has been met with a backlash on social media, with the Orpheum's Facebook event page inundated with angry comments.

Some have called the cancellation a form of censorship.

The USA's complex history with race has been a contentious issue in recent months. The removal of Confederate statues has divided the nation on whether such monuments commemorate the South or glorify slavery.

The rise of white nationalism has been aided by US President Donald Trump, who equated those who wore Nazi regalia and chanted racist remarks at the Charlottesville rally with those who rallied against them.
