The man who took the photo that launched countless memes has finally spoken out.
Antonio Guillem, a 45-year-old photographer from Barcelona, is the person responsible for the current online craze known as Distracted Boyfriend.
His business produces hundreds of stock photographs, selling up to 1600 a day; but one in particular has taken the internet by storm.
"I never thought that one of my images will be that popular," says Guillem.
"I didn't even know what a meme is until recently, when the models started to tell me about the memes that people were doing with our work."
Originally titled 'Disloyal Man Walking With His Girlfriend and Looking Amazed at Another Seductive Girl', Guillem took the photo in 2015 with three models he worked with often.
The image was perfect meme material due to the comical facial expressions and the versatility of meaning that could be imposed on the depicted love triangle.
One of the first notable instances of the photo being used as a meme was this tweet on August 20.
The Distracted Boyfriend meme has since been used extensively on Twitter, providing everything from political commentary to statements of personal failure.
Guillem has been inundated with media inquiries and has released a statement in response to what he calls the "meme situation", saying his company isn't worried about the photo being circulated online without a credit.
"The sales that are related with the memes are probably a 0.00000% of our monthly revenue. It's not relevant."
As to why the photo has become so popular, Guillem has an explanation.
"I think the image was a good foundation to whoever had the great idea to turn it into a metaphor that works for almost everything."
