The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards have been handed out at a ceremony in Los Angeles, with The Handmaid's Tale, Big Little Lies and Veep taking out many of the major awards.

Stephen Colbert hosted the show and dished out several sharp political jokes, including orchestrating a cameo by former White House press secretary Sean Spicer who mocked his own infamous "biggest crowd" gaffe.

Hulu's dystopian drama The Handmaid's Tale nabbed three of the major prizes - Best Drama Series, Best Director (Reed Morano) and Best Actress (Elisabeth Moss).

Moss, who also appeared in Top of the Lake this year, dropped an F-bomb during her speech - calling her mother a "f**king badass".

Hulu's win puts it ahead of rivals Netflix and Amazon to become the first streaming service to win a best series Emmy.

HBO series Big Little Lies was the big winner in the limited series categories, scoring Best Lead Actress (Nicole Kidman), Best Supporting Actress (Laura Dern), Best Supporting Actor (Alexander Skarsgard) and Best Director (Jean-Marc Vallee), as well as the overall Outstanding Limited Series.

In the comedy section, Veep took home Outstanding Comedy Series and Best Lead Actress (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), while Saturday Night Live, Atlanta and Master of None were also winners.

Elsewhere in the ceremony, the stars of 9 to 5 - Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin - referred to President Trump as "a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical, bigot boss", while Donald Glover thanked the former Celebrity Apprentice host for "making black people number one on the most oppressed list".
