Lena Dunham a fan of 'savage' Real Housewives of Auckland

It's always exciting when New Zealand gets a mention from Hollywood's elite.

But when a major international screen star admits she's been watching The Real Housewives of Auckland from her $6.6 million penthouse apartment in New York, it's perhaps more confusing than thrilling.

Girls creator and star Lena Dunham on Tuesday shared her enjoyment of The Real Housewives of Auckland, which is being broadcast in the US on the Bravo network.

She shared two posts on her Instagram story of her and a friend enjoying the Kiwi reality TV show - and then took to Twitter to share some thoughts on the series.

"I live for these women. Or should I say 'I leeev foh these weemun' (trying with the NZ accent)," she wrote, before describing the show as "savage".

When asked by a Kiwi Twitter user who was her favourite character from the series, Dunham replied in all-caps: "GILDA KIRKPATRICK".

Kirkpatrick, an advertising agency executive herself, is the wife of multi-millionaire property developer James Kirkpatrick.

It's not the first time this year New Zealand TV has gone international - in February, a scene on Shortland Street went viral after one character delivered the now infamous line: "Please tell me that is not your penis".
