Review: Mother! is 2017's most disturbing film

Darren Aronofsky's Mother (stylised as mother!) has just hit New Zealand cinemas and while Jennifer Lawrence is amazing in it, her fans may be in for a shock.

It's a deeply disturbing film, with one scene in particular that is taboo-busting and borderline obscene.

On top of the horrific imagery, this is also a deeply weird film which has a lot going on under its surface for audiences to read into and interpret in their own way. It's the sort of movie you come out of arguing over not only if it's good or bad, but also what it's actually about.

Fans of Aronofsky's previous films - Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler et al - will no doubt already be rushing to see this, but they should be warned: this is his most challenging film to date.

mother! is hugely ambitious and wildly original. It's incredibly well-made, but a polarising experience that should be approached with caution.

Four stars.
