Kate Winslet is set to reunite with Titanic director James Cameron 20 years on with a central role in his Avatar sequels.

The 41-year-old will be joining the likes of Cliff Curtis, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington and Stephen Lang on the four sequels.

"Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career," Cameron said.

"I can't wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life."

One of Winslet's first major breakthroughs was Sir Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures, which was filmed in Christchurch in 1993.

In 2015, she told media she had family in New Zealand, loved the Kiwi accent and that her husband was "a little bit afraid we might one time never come back from there because it's very hard to leave".

Released in 2009 after being filmed in New Zealand, Avatar made more money at the global box office than any other film in history, hauling in US$2.8 billion.

The four sequels will start hitting cinemas on December 18, 2020, with the last - Avatar 5 - set for a December, 2025 release.
