A Sex and the City cast member has waded deep in to the controversy surrounding the third film, throwing some major shade at the rumoured reason for the cancellation  - Kim Cattrall.

Willie Garson, who played Carrie Bradshaw's friend Stanford Blanch in the series and subsequent two films, tweeted on Wednesday (local time) implying Cattrall wasn't being honest about her claims that she never wanted to do a third film.

"Dear fans, because I'm 'toxic', I'm going to negotiate a contract for six months, not come to terms, then say I never wanted to do it anyway," Garson wrote in the tweet.

To a fan who suggested making the film without Cattrall, he responded; "Never, ALL integral pieces of a puzzle. Flawlessly played by all."

Cattrall, who played Samantha on the popular HBO series, has angrily denied claims that her continued list of demands led to the film being canned. Last weekend she responded to accusations on Twitter, using emoji language to call them a "shitstorm".

Although Cattrall has previously claimed she was not on board to join a third film, People magazine reports she was negotiating up until mid-year to join the movie.

Several of the series' other stars have openly written of their disappointment over the show not going ahead.

Show frontrunner Sarah Jessica Parker, who played lead character Carrie Bradshaw, told Extra she was "disappointed" in the result.

"It's over," she said. "We're not doing it. I'm disappointed. We had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story. It's not just disappointing that we don't get to tell the story and have that experience, but more so for that audience that has been so vocal in wanting another movie."
