The man who lived with pigs and cooked himself in an oven

A man who once lived with pigs for an art exhibition has tonight been honoured for his contribution to the arts.

Tongan-born Kalisolaite 'Uhila has won the Contemporary Pacific Artist Award at this year's Creative New Zealand Pasifika Awards.

"It means a lot, you know," he told Newshub.

"Especially for me to be recognised... like it's an honourable moment."

'Uhila's work is nothing short of experimental.

He's lived with pigs for eight days, cooked himself in an oven in front of a princess and become a human couch.

He's also spent three months living rough on the streets of Auckland - all in the name of art.

"Art is not an easy thing to do," he said.

So what is 'Uhila's approach to art?

"Picture a stop sign. If you keep going straight at a stop sign, you're just going to keep hitting the stop sign without stopping," he said.

"So it's trying to find another way. So if the stop's sign there, I might go around it, I might go underneath it, or I might climb over the stop sign."

For a man who's lived on the streets, it's proof you can still be happy as a pig in mud.
