AC/DC founder and guitarist Malcolm Young has died aged 64.

The Aussie rock legend died peacefully on Saturday after a long battle with dementia.

He is survived by his brother Angus.

Another brother, well-known producer and Easybeats guitarist George Young, died in October.

A statement by Angus Young on the AC/DC website praised Malcolm Young's "enormous dedication and commitment" which made him "the driving force behind the band".

"As a guitarist, songwriter and visionary he was a perfectionist and a unique man. He always stuck to his guns and did and said exactly what he wanted. He took great pride in all that he endeavoured. His loyalty to the fans was unsurpassed.

"As his brother it is hard to express in words what he has meant to me during my life, the bond we had was unique and very special. He leaves behind an enormous legacy that will live on forever. Malcolm, job well done."

Malcolm Young left AC/DC in 2014, as his dementia took hold. He last performed live with the band in 2010. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, with the rest of the band.

He and Angus wrote most of the band's material.
