Known for helping Kiwis make changes to their homes, Slice of Paradise host Peter Wolfkamp is now taking part in a different kind of makeover - shaving off his beard and growing a fresh moustache to raise money for Movember

The annual campaign has men around the country attempting - sometimes successfully, sometimes not - to grow a mo' to raise funds for prostate cancer treatment.

Speaking to Newshub, Wolfkamp said Wednesday's hot shave at The Shave Room in Ponsonby was "one checked off the bucket list".

"I've never had a hot shave and I have to say, it was a tremendous experience. The whole pampering thing with the towels and the steam, it's quite a process."

With the fun of the process comes the promotion of a serious cause, though - prostate cancer is the most common cancer among NZ men, with about 600 dying each year from the disease.

Wolfkamp told Newshub it's something that he has dealt with personally.

"Earlier this year, I attended the funeral of a friend, who passed away from prostate cancer," he said. "It wasn't the first and unfortunately it won't be the last.

"It's still not uncommon to hear guys say 'oh, I never go to the doctor'... by starting a dialogue, it gives an opportunity to get checked early. You always hear people say 'oh, if only they'd gone in to get checked out earlier... then it might not be too late'."

Wolfkamp walks the walk - he said he has been part of a 'Men's Health Initiative' since he turned 40 and gets regular medical check-ups.

He said, after recently turning 50, it played a more important role than ever.

"It's one of the great celebrations turning 50...the doctor says it's time to start taking [your cancer risk] seriously...there's more care and attention on your health".

This year, Wolfkamp has a goal of raising $3000 and says that, thanks to some early donations from friends, he's "already off to a flying start".

And for those who aren't so good at growing a mo?

"There's nothing like a challenge," he laughed.
