SWIDT wins Best Group at the 2017 NZ Music Awards

Auckland rap crew SWIDT has won Best Group at the 2017 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards (VNZMAs), on top of the win for Best Hip-Hop Group.

Last year, the collective was famously given the trophy for Best Urban/Hip-Hop by Aaradhna, who won it but refused to accept it.

She said at the time taking it wouldn't be truthful to her song - which addressed themes of racism - as the broad category felt like it was a catch-all for "brown people".

Onehunga-based SWIDT made waves with debut album Stoneyhunga this year, said to be packed with humour, throwbacks and a personalised tour into what it was like growing up in their hood.

For the Best Group honour, the rappers beat off competition from Devilskin, LEISURE and Shapeshifter.

SWIDT are also nominated for the People's Choice Award and Single of the Year.
