The best film of every year since 2000, according to reviews

Since 2000, Metacritic has aggregated reviews of major film releases by several of the world's most reputable critics.

It's a rival to Rotten Tomatoes, but takes a more nuanced approach to critical consensus. Metacritic tells readers how much most critics liked a film, rather than what percentage liked it at all.

Two New Zealand films have earned topped Metacritic's annual film list, both directed by Sir Peter Jackson, while the only film to score a perfect 100 score is Richard Linklater's Boyhood.

Below is a list of the top film from each year from 2000-17, with its Metacritic rating:

2000: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - 93 percent

2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - 92 percent

2002: Spirited Away - 96 percent

2003: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - 94 percent

2004: Sideways - 94 percent

2005: The Best of Youth - 89 percent

2006: Pan's Labyrinth - 98 percent

2007: Ratatouille - 96 percent

2008: 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days - 97 percent

2009: The Hurt Locker - 94 percent

2010: The Social Network - 95 percent

2011: A Separation - 95 percent

2012: Zero Dark Thirty - 95 percent

2013: 12 Years a Slave - 96 percent

2014: Boyhood - 100 percent

2015: Carol - 95 percent

2016: Moonlight - 99 percent

2017: A Fantastic Woman - 96 percent
