Marilyn Manson says people who have been sexually assaulted should go to the police, not the media.

The controversial rocker used to be engaged to Rose McGowan, one of the actresses at the forefront of Hollywood's recent wave of accusations.

Speaking to Channel 4, the 'Beautiful People' singer said he's not surprised by the scandal, but doesn't want it to "turn the whole world's attention from the artistic element of Hollywood and movies and films".

"There's serious allegations, and they're always allegations of course, but when someone starts complaining about something that happened that seems a little bit not as serious as really sexual assault, I think that's insulting to people that have been sexually assaulted.

"It pisses me off that when someone says 'someone gave me an inappropriate gift' or something. That's not the same as being harmed."

He fears being accused if he simply looks at a woman the "wrong way".

"If you have something to say you should say it to the police and not to the press, and handle it that way first and foremost, and that's what I would do."

While Manson says he doesn't disagree with his ex-fiancée's campaign, he doesn't like "the entire snowball effect that’s happened that could ruin a lot of people's lives that don't need to be ruined".

In October former Marilyn Manson bassist Twiggy Ramirez was accused of rape, by Jessicka Addams, lead singer of '90s alternative rock band Jack Off Jill.

Manson promptly fired Ramirez from the band.

McGowan is one of several Hollywood actresses who claim to have been sexually harassed, raped or assaulted by producer Harvey Weinstein.
