Critics and fans alike are panning the latest work from Kiwi actor Karl Urban, despite him sharing the screen with A-lister Al Pacino.

Hangman, a detective thriller in the vein of Se7en, currently hovers at a dire 7 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with an only marginally better 29 percent favourability among audience reviews.

One critic gave the scalding summary, "I would be tempted to suggest [the film] is beneath the talents of everyone involved, but they knew what they were getting into when they read it," while another simply called it "dumb, dull and overly familiar".

This will likely prove a minor blip for Urban, who starred in the thundering box office success that was Thor: Ragnarok this year and had leading roles in last year's Pete's Dragon and Star Trek Beyond

By contrast, the glory days of The Godfather seem well and truly behind Pacino, with the past five films starring the Academy Award winner receiving "rotten" ratings.

It looks like it will be much safer to stick to seeing Star Wars this Christmas.
