Meryl Streep's character killed off in Mamma Mia 2?

The trailer for the Mamma Mia sequel is here.

Predictably entitled Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the musical movie is once again inspired by the music of ABBA and filled with star power in the form of Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth.

But the first look at the film also indicates Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep's character Donna will be killed off, which will allow Lily James to take centre stage as a young Donna.

The trailer indicates the new Mamma Mia will traverse Donna's life in her years before daughter Sophie came along - and explain just how she became a hotelier in the Greek islands.

"Your mother was the bravest person we ever knew. Let me tell you how she did it, all on her own," Donna's friend Rosie can be heard saying to Sophie.

The death of Streep's character was always going to happen, it is believed, and isn't at all related to the criticism she has received for allegedly knowing about disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein's sexual misconduct.

Universal Pictures, the company behind the second instalment of the Mammia Mia series, will be hoping it's as successful as its predecessor, which earned more than US$600 million (NZ$855 million) worldwide.
