Meryl Streep to star in Big Little Lies season two

Meryl Streep has been added to the star-studded cast of acclaimed HBO drama Big Little Lies.

The Out of Africa star will be playing the mother of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard), who moves to Monterey in search of answers over what happened to her son, and out of concern for her grandchildren.

Streep joins Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, the only stars of the first season confirmed thus far to be returning for season two.

It's a highly rare TV role for the three-time Oscar winner, whose last major small screen outing was 2003's Angels in America.

Big Little Lies has been a huge success, with the first season nabbing three Golden Globes, eight Emmys and two SAG Awards.

Based on the Liane Moriarty novel, Big Little Lies is a David E Kelley series that's directed by Jean-Marc Valee.
