South Canterbury based radio station Port FM has announced it will merge with MediaWorks from April 1, 2018.

It will become part of the More FM network of local stations shortly after, continuing Port FM's current local Breakfast and Day shows, with More FM's Lana & Jase broadcasting in the Drive slot from 3-7pm weekdays.

Port FM's founder and General Manager, Brent Birchfield, says after a 40 year career in radio it's time to focus on his other business interests.

"My partner Rhona Anderson and I have invested a lot of blood, sweat and tears into Port FM Network and really appreciate the support we've had along the way," says Birchfield.

"It's been a blast and a real pleasure to work in these towns and to inform and assist the people and organisations within them. I'm pleased to be leaving the network in the hands of MediaWorks, who are as passionate about local radio as we are."

Birchfield will continue to oversee Port FM operations during the transition period.

Leon Wratt, MediaWorks' Group Content Director for Radio, is excited for the transition which extends MediaWorks Radio's reach in the regions.

"Brent has built a fantastic station and we look forward to continuing his legacy by providing great local radio to Port FM's dedicated listeners", says Wratt.

"By bringing More FM into this region, we're strengthening our local radio offering and opening up new markets across Canterbury and Otago for listeners and advertisers."
