House of Cards actor Reg E Cathey has died, aged 59.

He was known for his Emmy-winning portrayal of BBQ joint owner Freddy Hayes on House of Cards, a role he held for three years.

He also played Baltimore politician Norman Wilson on the HBO drama the The Wire. Show creator David Simon paid tribute to Cathey on Twitter, calling him a "masterful actor".

"Reg Cathey, 1958-2018," he wrote.

"Not only a fine, masterful actor -- but simply one of the most delightful human beings with whom I ever shared some long days on set.

"On wit alone, he could double any man over and leave him thinking. Reg, your memory is a great blessing."

Cathey's other credits include Born on the Fourth of July (1989), What About Bob? (1991), Seven (1995), and American Psycho (2001).

More recently he appeared in the 2015 Fantastic Four remake, Cinemax series Outcast and HBO's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
