Iconic Titantic stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have saved a British woman's life by raising money to fund her cancer treatment.

Twenty-nine-year-old British woman Gemma Nuttall refused treatment until her pregnancy was over in order to save her baby's life. She was told if she delayed treatment she would die, but didn't want to lose her baby.

After she gave birth, doctors gave her six months to live, but she never gave up.

She and her mother launched a £300,000 (NZ$580,000) crowdfunding campaign to raise enough money for treatment in Germany.

Hollywood actress Winslet came across Ms Nuttall's story and, together with DiCaprio, auctioned three private "Jack and Rose" themed dinners at a charity dinner for DiCaprio's conservation foundation.

The money raised more than covered Ms Nuttall's treatments, which she finished five months ago.

She has recently been told she is cancer-free.

Ms Nuttall told The Independent she couldn't thank Winslet enough.

"Without her donations, and the public's, my story would be very different.

"We thought it was a wind-up, but then she called and I realised she was serious.

"I was so nervous but she asked me how I was feeling and how my treatment was going - she wanted to help.

"I told her I could never thank her enough and she told me not to be daft.

"She said she had read about my story online, that she had three kids of her own and had thought about what she would be like in that position."

In November 2017, Winslet said the greatest privilege was being able to use her voice to help others.
