Sheeran is in town for three concerts at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
The town has painted itself 'Ed' to celebrate the event, with a huge mural installed on Bath St and 'Ed' painted blue on local signage in reference to his latest album Divide.
He was quite chuffed with the welcome, pointing it out on his Instagram story.
"They've changed the name of their airport - so awesome," he could be heard saying in the clip.
