Unconventional YouTube star Bento, the keyboard-playing cat who found fame through a string of viral videos, has died.

Bento, aged nine, known as Keyboard Cat, died on March 8 leaving behind his owner Charlie Schmidt.

Bento was adopted from an animal shelter to replace the original Keyboard Cat, and shot to fame in viral videos in 2009 of himself playing the piano.

Bento carried on the legacy of his predecessor and became an online superstar and local celebrity in his home town of Spokane, Washington.

His death was confirmed by Schmidt who announced his death on his official Facebook page on Saturday as well as posting a tribute video to Bento.

Twitter users have also paid tribute to the feline star.

One user said "R.I.P Bento the Keyboard Cat, you'll always and forever be one of my favourite old internet memes".
