After spending over two years together, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik have called it quits.

The pop music/fashion power couple have been together since 2015, and have publicly shared much of their relationship on social media.

Rumours of a break-up swirled as Malik unfollowed Hadid and her family members on Instagram. A couple of hours later, both stars took to Twitter to publicly confirm their split.

"Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and friend," Malik wrote in a statement, adding that the model had an "incredible soul".

"I'm grateful to all our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time, we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all. xZ"

Following his statement, Hadid released her own on Twitter.

"Break-up statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years... not only in the relationship but in life in general," she wrote.

"I'm forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever's meant to be will always be."

This might make that tattoo Malik has on his chest of Hadid's eyes a little bit awkward.

Hadid and Malik initially met in 2015. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres soon after, Hadid opened up about their first date, which took place at New York City's Gemma restaurant.

"We played it cool for like ten minutes, and then I was like 'You're really cute,'" she told DeGeneres.

"We connected really quickly. We kind of had the same sense of humour and just started sharing videos."

Previously, Malik went through a public break-up with Little Mix star Perrie Edwards.
