New Zealand must have left its mark on Oprah Winfrey - the media mogul has shared her plans to spend a milestone birthday here.

In a new interview with People magazine, the former talk show host says she's planning a big hiking trip in Aotearoa for her 65th birthday in January next year.

"I'm not going to be skinny, not trying for a size. I'm just trying to be as healthy as my body wants to be.

"My goal is to be 65 and you all say, 'What happened to Oprah? She got ripped!' That's my goal. Yes, honey."

After losing 19kg through Weight Watchers, Winfrey says her goal is to stay healthy and maintain her weight loss.

"I would really like to firm up, feel as fit as possible," she said. "I'm going to start a weight-training program. Maybe I'll run a half marathon.

"I really do feel healthier than I've been my whole life".

Winfrey spent some time on our shores last year, filming Wrinkle in Time with Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling. Wrinkle in Time is set to be released in cinemas April 12 2018.
