Chicken Run sequel to hatch after 18-year wait

Legendary stop-motion animated film Chicken Run is officially winging its way back onto the big screen with a sequel.

The original film, released in 2000, was an instant hit and remains the most successful stop-motion-animated film of all time.

And animation studio Aardman has now confirmed it's hatching a comeback.

Details are scarce about the upcoming project, however Paul Kewley, who previously worked on Shaun the Sheep, has been confirmed as the producer while Paranorman's Sam Fell will direct, according to Hollywood Reporter.

It's not yet known if its plucky heroes Ginger (Julia Sawalha) and Rocky (Mel Gibson) will be returning in the sequel.

The announcement of the sequel has been widely praised on social media, despite the 18-year-long gap between films.

"Thank you so much I actually cried when I heard this news," one fan wrote on Twitter.

Chicken Run had a budget of US$45 million and grossed more than US$224 million in 2000.

Its sequel will be released after Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon debuts next spring (NZ time).
