Lorde has scrambled to apologise after a posting a poorly thought out image to Instagram, insisting she wasn't poking fun at Whitney Houston's death.

The Kiwi songstress posted a photo of a marble bathtub, filling with hot water and complete with newspaper and book following a concert in New York on Wednesday night (local time).

So far, so inoffensive... except the 'Supercut' performer captioned the post: "And iiii will always love you [sic]".

Quoting the lyrics of Houston's classic 'I Will Always Love You' after the singer famously died in 2012 by downing in a bathtub in a Los Angeles hotel was quickly noticed by fans.

The comments section on Lorde's social media post immediately went into overdrive.

When Lorde (presumably) got out of the bath and checked her phone, she immediately deleted the post and took to her Instagram story to apologise.

"Extremely extremely poorly chosen quote," she wrote

"I'm so sorry for offending anyone - I hadn't even put this together, I was just excited to take a bath.

"I am an idiot. Love Whitney forever and ever."

Her next post stated: "It's not my fkn day today".
