Sam Rockwell will reportedly play a Nazi captain in Taika Waititi's upcoming satirical film Jojo Rabbit, in which the Kiwi filmmaker himself will portray Adolf Hitler.

The Moon star is the second major Hollywood actor to be cast in the film, following Scarlett Johansson.

Rockwell recently won his first Oscar for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, and has featured in other films including Choke, The Way Way Back and Seven Psychopaths.

Jojo Rabbit will centre on a young boy who longs to be part of the Hitler Youth but discovers a Jewish girl living in his attic and, after initially trying to find ways to get rid of her, begins to see her as human.

It's Waititi's follow-up to Thor: Ragnarok, which has hauled in NZ$1.2 billion internationally as his first Hollywood feature after successful New Zealand films including Boy, What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Rockwell's casting has been reported on by Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, among other publications.
