BBC Radio 1's Greg James is feeling the wrath of Taylor Swift fans online after joking that the singer should "take a shower" during a backstage interview.

The 'Shake it Off' hitmaker performed to a crowd of 26,000 at the Biggest Weekend Festival in Wales on the weekend, on a day that was reportedly 80 percent humidity.

"I think you need to have a shower now," James said.

"I agree," the pop star replied.

"And I'm not offended that you said that. There's a lot going on, and none of its good here."

Despite her insistence that the jibe was well-warranted, fans of the Grammy Award-winner came out in droves online to give the radio host a piece of their mind.

"I can't believe someone had the audacity to tell Taylor Swift to take a shower in her first interview in two years. THE NERVE!" one tweet read.

The reporter, who previously sang Taylor's hit 'Blank Space' with her while driving around London, did his best to convince people there was no bad blood between the two.

"TS has a great sense of humour and we have known each other for ages and had a good catch up after the interview. It's all cool," he wrote.

Despite being called names like "jerk" and "moron", he remained light-hearted about the situation, adding: "If anyone's got a video of a cow that gets excited when it sees the Queen, now would be a good time to tweet it."

Meanwhile, Taylor posted a fresh-faced, sweat-free photo of herself from the Wales gig on Instagram, where she promoted her upcoming Reputation Tour dates in the UK.
