Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 battle royale mode announced

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will include a battle royale mode called Blackout to take on the wildly popular Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG).

It will also be the first main Call of Duty game to not include a single-player campaign, publisher Activision announced.

Battle royale games have revolutionised the first-person shooter genre over the last few years, and feature a large amount of players - normally 100 - entering into combat that is won when just one winner, or winning team, is left alive.

Blackout will take place on a huge map that is roughly 1500 times larger than popular Black Ops map Nuketown, says developer Treyarch.

It will also allow players to use vehicles on the land, sea and air - a key difference to Fortnite and PUBG.

Black Ops 4 will feature class-based character customisation and is set between the events of Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 3, so will likely feature many near-future weapon systems.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is set for release in October on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
