Lizzie Marvelly has taken to Instagram to come out as bisexual, after being nominated for a Celebrity Ally honour at the 2018 New Zealand LGBTI Awards.

The Kiwi singer/songwriter said she was unable to accept the award, which recognises well-known heterosexual allies of the LGBTI community.

"I am bisexual. He takatāpui au," said Marvelly in the post.

"Over the last few years, I've slowly been going through the process of coming out."

"While I feel really honoured that someone nominated me... it's important that I acknowledge that I'm actually a member of the rainbow community."

Marvelly has previously been a part of a web series for teens called The Real Sex Talk, which, among other subjects, discussed same-sex relationships.

"I know its 2018 and it shouldn't be a big deal, but honestly, it hasn't been easy. I didn't know I was bi until my early 20s," she said.

Marvelly also revealed that she is in a relationship, writing: "I won't be going into any further detail about my relationship with my girlfriend, other than to say that I'm very happy.

"And at the end of the day, that's the most important thing."

The 2018 New Zealand LGBTI Awards will be handed out at a ceremony in November.
