A new style of jean that has almost all of the denim removed is being mocked online after going on sale in a Los Angeles fashion outlet.

The 'extreme cut out jean' is being sold by Carmar for US $168 (NZ$239) per pair.

Pictures of the outrageous style have been posted on image-sharing website Imgur under the title, "millennial hipsters are now invading the fashion industry".

"$168?! Are people crazy? I can do that to an old pair of jeans for free!" wrote a commenter on Perez Hilton's Instagram post of the jeans.

Carmar describes itself as "a premium denim brand catered to the free-spirited generation of today".

"These fabrications entice the carefree attitude of the Carmar girl who always looks for style and comfort," claims the Carmar website.

"The Carmar brand takes denim to the next level."

The outlet describes the 'extreme cut out jean' as a "relax fit, high-rise pant with large statement cut-outs on front and back".
