Taika Waititi jokes that his favourite place in New Zealand is the departure lounge

Taika Waititi has deadpanned on Twitter that his favourite place in New Zealand is "departure lounge".

The Thor: Ragnarok filmmaker may have been referring to a restaurant in Whitianga called The Departure Lounge, but it's more likely he's trolling his Kiwi critics.

Waititi has made headlines over the last year by upsetting various media commentators with his calling out of social and environmental issues he sees in his home country.

Fans on Twitter were quick to add their own humourous replies to Waititi's tweet, including predicting how former National Party leader Don Brash would respond.

Other Twitter replies to Waititi's two-word message included multiple uses of the words "harsh", "ouch" and "burn".

One Twitter user replied that it was the country's favourite place for Waititi, too, while another said the tweet "hurt".

In other recent Waititi on Twitter news, he wished his mum a happy Mother's Day, expressed excitement about Spike Lee's film BlacKkKlansman and made a joke about a phallic tree in France.
