He gifted the award to James Shaw Jr, the real-life hero who stopped a gunman at a Texas Waffle House and saved lives.
Shaw Jr was at the awards show as a guest, but had no idea about Boseman's plan.
"Receiving an award for playing a superhero is amazing, but it's even greater to acknowledge the heroes we have in real life," Boseman said as he pulled Shaw Jr on stage.
"I just want to acknowledge a real hero."
He then handed over the golden popcorn statue.
"This is going to live at your house - God bless you," Boseman said.
More than just his act of bravery, Shaw Jr also started a GoFundMe page for the families of the victims of the shooting, raising almost US$250,000 (NZ$360,000).
