Controversial rapper XXXTentacion has been shot dead in Florida.

TMZ reports that the 20-year-old, whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy, was shot in his vehicle as he was leaving a motorcycle dealership at Deerfield Beach, about 40 miles north of Miami.

Broward County Sheriff's Department said that the rapper had been pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital as a 'Level 1' trauma patient, TMZ reports.

An eyewitness said he had "no pulse" and appeared lifeless when he was found in his vehicle.

Billboard confirmed that XXXTentacion had been killed in an armed robbery.

TMZ reports that witnesses told police a Louis Vuitton bag had been taken from the rapper's vehicle.

XXXTentacion was a popular figure in SoundCloud rap, a modern trap music genre.

He was awaiting trial for domestic violence against his pregnant girlfriend at the time of the shooting, whom he was accused of strangling, kidnapping and sexually assulting.

He was also facing more than a dozen felony charges, including witness tampering. He had been under house arrest but a judge had recently rescinded it so that he could go on tour.

Streaming app Spotify removed XXXTentacion's music in May under their new 'hateful conduct policy', but brought it back after an outcry from prominent rap figures including Kendrick Lamar.
