Dancing sisters Maddie and Mackenzie Ziegler talk sibling rivalry

Two of the world's most famous dancing siblings have opened up about the complicated relationship.

Maddie, 15, and Mackenzie Ziegler, 14, are both actresses, models and now dance teachers. They both starred as young children on the hit reality TV show Dance Moms.

Maddie got her big break at just 11 years old, when pop superstar Sia asked her to appear in the music video for her song, 'Chandelier'. Since then she's starred in many more of Sia's videos and even went on tour with the singer.

Mackenzie told The Project her introduction to dancing started out more as a matter of convenience than enthusiasm.

"I had to go to the studio to watch Maddie, so my mom was like, 'Eh, I'll just put her in dance so it's easier for the both of us.' I found a passion for it when I was eight or nine."

While she's come into her own as a dancer, Mackenzie admits she used to feel overshadowed by her older sister.

"I didn't really like it when I was younger because I was getting compared to Maddie. I really just wanted to have fun and hang out with my friends, but now I obviously love it so much."

The two sisters have always been close, although they admit they're no strangers to sibling rivalry.

"I don't think there's anything that I don't like about you; the only thing that annoys me is that you steal my clothes," Mackenzie says of her sister.

"We both steal each other's clothes because we fit into each other's stuff. It's just a sister thing," says Maddie.

"But we used to fight every single day on Dance Moms."

Mackenzie believes they fought so much "because we were with each other 24/7".

"We never got a break from each other," says Maddie.

Host Jeremy Corbett had a cheeky request for the Zieglers - that they tell his daughters, Charlie and Billy (which coincidentally are Maddie and Mackenzie's favourite names), not to quit dancing.

The sisters were only too happy to impart some wisdom.

"Keep up with the dance lessons - if you want to," says Maddie.

Maddie and Mackenzie will bring their dance master class to Auckland on July 10 and 11.
