Joe Jackson dead at 89

The patriarch of the Jackson family has died.

Joe Jackson was hospitalised on Monday (local time) with a possible terminal illness. Rumours of his ill health began swirling on Friday after a TMZ investigation.

Sources from inside the family said Jackson had stage four pancreatic cancer.

The 89-year-old cemented his family's name in music history after launching the Jackson Five.

In the 1960s, Jackson strictly trained his young children as singers and dancers and led The Jackson 5 to global pop music success.

Michael Jackson later went solo and became one of the best-known celebrities in the world, before his death at age 50 in 2009 from an overdose of the powerful anaesthetic propofol.

Jackson's family has been plagued with infighting, including legal battles, arguments over money and estrangements. According to The Daily Mail some family members were even banned from entering his hospital room.
