The two actresses were being interviewed on The Graham Norton Show to promote the film, along with Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock and Sarah Paulson.
The film follows a crew of women carrying out a heist at the Met Gala, arguably the world's most prestigious fashion event.
When host Graham Norton asked the cast whether they had all attended the real Met Gala, they all said yes - except for Bonham-Carter.
While Blanchett, Bullock and Paulson expressed shock and disbelief, Rihanna simply turned and pointed to Bonham-Carter's outfit.
"That's 'cause you wear dresses like that," she said, to roars of laughter from the audience and cast alike.
Bonham-Carter is known for her quirky, eclectic style.
"That's right, that's entirely right," Bonham-Carter wailed.
"I'm gonna cry now."
Bonham-Carter made an attempt to get her own back later in the show by referencing Rihanna's canary yellow 2015 Met Gala dress, saying it looked like an omelette.
A film about Rihanna's 'omelette' dress and the designer behind it, directed by New Zealander Pietra Brettkelly, is set to premiere at the New Zealand International Film Festival next month.
