Missy Elliot has taken to Twitter to give props to a 58-year-old woman who covered her hit song 'Work It' at a karaoke competition in a Rhode Island park.

Mary Halsey put her own spin on the 2002 jam, complete with elephant sound effects and utilising some kind of animal horn as a prop.

Missy posted a clip of the stirring performance on Twitter, making reference to Mary's self-proclaimed title of "Missy's funky white sister".

"Wait I just found out I have a funky white sister," Missy captioned the video.

"She straight up killed 'Work it' with the yea yea yea [sic] at the beginning and the sound effects and all."

The Grammy Award-winning rapper paid special mention to the woman in the background of the clip too, who almost stole the show.

"Hold up she brought her home girl to da cookout too. She the one tiptoeing in the background with a cup of oodles & noodles in her hand."

Missy wasn't the only celebrity impressed with Mary's rapping prowess. Jada Pinkett Smith posted the clip to her Instagram with the caption: "Ladies and gentlemen...introducing Mary Halsey."

Beyonce's mother Tina Knowles also felt compelled to share the performance, adding, "Love This!!!!!! She is killing this!!!"

"Check out the cool lady tipping around with her cup of noodles. That would be me."

Meanwhile, Mary is delighted with her newfound viral fame, regularly updating her Facebook page with how many times her video has been viewed.

At the time of writing, her cover has been watched nearly 6 million times.
