Prince William and Kate Middleton discuss the time they broke up

They're a happily married royal couple with three children now, but Prince William and Kate Middleton's fairy tale romance once almost fell apart.

In an interview reported on by several major British tabloids, the pair has spoken about the time they split up while still in university.

Prince William and Duchess Kate say the break was good for their relationship - but she admits it was difficult.

"At the time I wasn't very happy about it but actually it made me a stronger person," says Duchess Kate.

"I really valued that time for me as well although I didn't think it at the time, looking back on it."

The break up reportedly happened four years into their dating each other, when Prince William couldn't spend New Year's Eve with the Middleton family.

"We did split up for a bit," says Prince William.

"We were both very young, it was at university and we were both finding ourselves and being different characters and stuff.

"It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up... It was just a bit of space. It worked out for the better."

After the brief split, the pair went on to become the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge when they wed in 2011.
