Actress Ruby Rose has deleted her Twitter account amidst a backlash to her being cast as an out lesbian Batwoman for the TV series Arrowverse.

Rose said she was an "emotional wreck" in an Instagram post following the announcement last week, as she explained how important landing the role was for her.

"This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on TV and felt alone and different," she wrote at the time.

The Orange Is The New Black star also played lesbian character Stella Carlin in the hit Netflix series, and herself identifies as gender fluid.

Now, it appears she has left Twitter as a result of insults and questions around whether she is fit to play the Kate Kane/Batwoman role.

Before deleting her account, she wrote a parting message captured by multiple media outlets.

"Where on earth did 'Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can't be batwoman' come from?" she wrote, calling the claim "ridiculous".

"I came out at 12 and have for the past five years have had to deal with 'she's too gay' - how do y'all flip it like that?" she added.

"I didn't change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys."

She continued that she "loves a challenge", but that she wished women and the LGBT community were more supportive to one another.

Rose concluded that she'd be taking time off Twitter in order to sleep and focus on her upcoming projects, quipping, "if you need me, I'll be on my Bat Phone".
