The Block NZ: Amy and Stu apologise for cheating after $5000 fine

The Block NZ contestants Amy and Stu have apologised after being caught cheating, and then lying about it.

"We messed up and we let you all down," they said in a statement to Newshub on Monday evening.

"It's never nice to disappoint people including ourselves, our fans, the other teams and Wolfy."

The Gisborne duo were busted for keeping a tradie working at their home on Friday after the strict 'tools down' curfew of 6pm.

They attempted to deny what they'd done when they were confronted, but it was all caught on camera - and so were Amy's lies.

Host Mark Richardson played a recording where Amy could clearly be heard saying: "Our electrician hid here because he's not finished, so he hid in the cupboard."

She knew the time was 6:20pm, but she said it would be fine and the situation wasn't as serious as it seemed.

But Richardson disagreed.

"That is a very serious matter because if we are found to be in breach of our resource consents the whole site could get shut down. Not to mention you guys get an unfair advantage."

The pair were disqualified from winning the room reveal challenge for the 'Blank Canvas' week and the prize of $5000.

But it didn't end there, they were also slapped with a $5000 fine for the incident.

"The road is a bit rocky for the Gizzy Hard team for the next wee while but we really hope we can regain your respect and support over the coming weeks and get back to showing you some really great designs and spaces," Amy and Stu concluded in their statement.

The Block NZ airs Sunday at 7pm and Monday to Wednesday at 7:30pm on Three.
