Iconic Auckland horror theme park Spookers put up for sale

Auckland's scariest venue is looking for an international buyer.

Spookers Haunted Attraction Theme Park - located at Kingseat, a rural community between Karaka and Waiuku - has announced it has engaged Divest Ltd to market the attraction for sale, following "international interest" in purchasing the Spookers brand.

The theme park, which has run for 13 years, said in a Facebook post a buyer will be sought for the entire tourism business which includes Spookers, The Amazing Maze 'n Maize, CornEvil, and Run for Your Freak'n Life mud run/obstacle race.

Andy and Beth Watson, who own the haunted attraction, have decided to spend more time at home, with Mr Watson's role as the Mayor of Rangitikei - a territorial authority in the Manawatu-Whanganui region - becoming "challenging" to balance along with other projects.

The owners' daughter, Spookers managing director Julia Tukiri, says the company is "incredibly excited" about the "potential this may unlock for a new owner, and for us in the years to come".

She said new owners will be able to "bring some new excitement, new ideas, growth and enthusiasm to the business", adding she's "confident about this next move for us, and for Spookers".

The attraction is New Zealand's largest operator in the haunted horror entertainment field - a billion dollar industry in the United States.

"Very few tourism businesses ever achieve the level of success that we have," said Ms Tukiri.

"We love what we do, working with them all, and we're excited to keep doing that at Spookers in the meantime."

As there is no guarantee that Spookers will be sold, everything will remain the same until that happens, the company said.
