Mary Halsey, who shot to internet stardom with her cover of Missy Elliot's 'Work It', was gobsmacked when the Grammy Award-winner joined her on The Ellen Show.

The 58-year-old, who refers to herself as the rapper's 'Funky White Sister', received a shout-out from Missy when a clip of her performing the 2002 hit went viral.

Mary's video of her recital at a Rhode Island karaoke competition has been viewed over 13 million times, generating a buzz that saw her perform on the talk show this week.

Ellen DeGeneres and her celebrity guest Kirsten Bell watched on as Mary pulled out all the stops for her rendition, when suddenly Missy appeared next to her and joined in.

After a star-struck moment of disbelief, Mary launched back into spitting verses alongside her idol, whose track she says she's been singing "for 15 years."

Missy later took to social media to gush about her fan and new friend.

"Mary you are a gem! My Funky White Sister."

The hip hop icon also thanked Ellen for bringing the pair together.

"May God bless you because of your HUGE heart," she wrote.

"You have always used your platform to make people smile, like Mary Halsey who is one of the sweetest people I've met!"

Before taking the stage, Mary told Ellen she was "shocked" about the success of the video, but she had always hoped she would one day go viral.
