Sacha Baron Cohen is being sued for US$95 million by US politician Roy Moore, who claims he was defamed by the comedian on his show Who Is America? .

Former senate candidate Moore alleges he and his family were caused "severe emotional distress" by the stunt, in which Cohen waved a beeping 'paedophile detector' over him.

While disguised as 'Israeli anti-terrorism expert' Erran Morad, Moore claims Cohen "falsely painted, portrayed, mocked and with malice defamed" him as a sex offender - an accusation he has vehemently denied.

Last year, Moore lost the Alabama Senate seat election amid several claims of sexual assault. One woman alleged Moore initiated a sexual encounter with her when she was 14 years old.

The lawsuit states that Cohen's "fraudulent portrayal and mocking" of Moore has severely harmed his reputation, and will cause him and his family financial damage.

Moore's wife Kayla is also a plaintiff, having been "forced to endure the effects" of her husband's appearance on the show.

The Republican eventually stormed out of his faux interview on Who Is America?, but not before attempting to defend himself against the beeping piece of 'Israeli technology'.

"If this is an instrument - certainly, I'm not a paedophile," he told Cohen.

"I've been married for 33 [years]. I've never had an accusation of such things."

He later released a statement admitting he had been duped, and condemning Cohen for his "trickery, deception and dishonesty".
