Former Spice Girl Mel B will undergo months of random drug testing after a Los Angeles court found evidence of repeated substance abuse during a custody hearing.

According to court documents obtained by US Weekly, evidence showed "habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances/alcohol by the petitioner [Mel B]."

The 43-year-old, full name Melanie Brown and also known as Scary Spice, has been embroiled in a bitter custody battle with ex-husband Stephen Belafonte, whom she accused of abusing her.

Now both Brown and Belafonte must pay for four months of random drug testing.

The judge also ordered the pair to hire a new nanny who will be present at all times when their daughter Madison is in their care.

Brown has denied abusing drugs. Last month, she told The Sun, "I am fully aware I have been at a crisis point... I am dealing with it."

"It has been unbelievably traumatic reliving an emotionally abusive relationship and confronting so many massive issues in my life," she continued.

She added that she was undergoing therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder, and had used alcohol to "numb" her pain.

Brown and Belafonte reportedly reached a confidential settlement in the case.
