Former Shortland Street actor Pua Magasiva has left radio station Flava's breakfast show following legal troubles connected to a drink-driving charge.

NZME reports that Magasiva resigned from his hosting role on The Wake Up Call, which he joined in 2015.

Known for his role as nurse Vinnie on Shortland Street, Magasiva was not on-air for the announcement, but had a prepared statement read out by Flava content director Hayden Hare.

"I want to thank the team at Flava for all the great times and laughter we've had, especially the ones I have worked closely with - Sela, Tarsh and Storme - for bearing with me," the statement read.

"I couldn't have asked for a better family."

Earlier this year, Magasiva pleaded guilty to a drink-driving charge and was sentenced to 80 hours community service. He was also disqualified from holding a driver's license for 13 months.

It was reportedly his third drink-driving offence, according to Stuff.

At the time, Magasiva told NZME he had "fully owned up" to the mistake.

"I am sincerely sorry for putting my family, especially my daughter and my employers and sponsors in this position," he said.

Last month, the broadcaster appeared in Auckland District Court having allegedly breached the conditions of a limited driving license he had been granted.
