Armageddon Expo: What it means to be a cosplayer

Superheroes, mythical creatures and all things supernatural took over Auckland during the Labour Day weekend.

The Armageddon Expo at the ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane saw thousands of enthusiasts suit up and show off their impressive costumes.

Cosplay, short for costume play, is a hobby where people dress up as their favourite fictional characters.

It's been around for a while, with its origins dating back to the first World Science Convention in 1939.

But these days, cosplay has become much more mainstream.

To the players, dressing up is more than just a hobby - with cosplayer Ben saying you "become" the character.

Newshub caught up with Ben for a behind-the-scenes look at the world of cosplay.
