Chris Evans bids farewell to Captain America role

Chris Evans has emotionally said goodbye to his role of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he completed his last day of filming for Avengers 4.

The 37-year-old says he's "eternally grateful" for the "honour" of portraying the superhero since his debut in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger.

"Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least," Evans tweeted.

"Playing this role over the last eight years has been an honour. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful."

The message has triggered a number of emotional replies, including from fellow Hollywood movie stars.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds said it left him "weeping", while Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson told Evans "congrats" with a shaka brah emoji.

Captain America had a relatively small amount of screentime in this year's Avengers: Infinity War, but is said to have a lot more in the next - and final - movie.

Avengers 4 opens in May, 2019.
