A 12-year-old boy is petitioning to bring heavy metal band Metallica back to New Zealand.

On Tuesday afternoon William Bush surpassed his goal of 500 signatures on his Change.org petition, appealing to the rockers to include down under on their WorldWired tour schedule.

With a new aim of 1000 supporters, Bush wrote that the bogans and metal heads are more than ready for another visit.

"Dear Metallica," the petition reads. "It's been 8 years since you've visited New Zealand shores and we are all hoping for your return.

"The Bogans and Metal heads of our country have had an eight year withdrawal and can't wait for the next time they'll get to see Metallica live in NZ.

"We believe this is long overdue and we deserve a Metallica Concert!!!" he wrote.

"Whether you play in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington my home province Hawkes Bay, Kiwis just want a Metallica concert."

Bush told Hawkes Bay Today the group are one of his favourite bands.

"I wasn't old enough to see them the last time they came here because I was four, so I thought what other way than to create a petition," he told Hawkes Bay Today.

His father, Matt, explained his children have been into a music for a long time after taking them to an AC/DC concert when William was three.
