'No, don't!' - Prince William's response to Emma Thompson's cheeky request at damehood ceremony

Actress Emma Thompson says she attempted to sneak in a royal kiss from Prince William as he was honouring her with a damehood earlier this week.

The Harry Potter star spoke to reporters after the ceremony on Thursday (local time) at Buckingham palace, where she gushed about the royal father of three, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

"I love Prince William," she said.

"I've known him since he was little, and we just sniggered at each other.

"I said, 'I can't kiss you, can I?' And he said, 'No, don't!'"

The Oscar-winner arrived at the auspicious occasion wearing a Stella McCartney suit, accessorised with white sneakers and a badge supporting equal pay.

"It's really lovely because I've always loved the boys, and I've always been a long-term correspondent with their dad," she continued.

"It's a lovely feeling."

Thompson received the title for her services to Drama across a lengthy career that includes starring roles in Sense and Sensibility, Love Actually and Henry V.

She told media she plans to use her newfound status to bring awareness to various important causes.

"I'm very outspoken, politically," she said.

"I'm a card-carrying feminist, human rights advocate, so good for them, because the establishment need more people who can speak up for those things."
