'I'm still alive': Spike Lee responds to Gisborne Herald's Stan Lee death gaffe

Spike Lee has taken to social media to assure fans he has not died, after the Gisborne Herald got him mixed up with Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker of Do the Right Thing and BlacKkKlansman shared an Instagram post that jokingly mixed his film titles with Marvel titles, along with a message that he's "still alive".

"God bless Stan Lee. Me? Not yet," said Spike.

"And that's the 'I'm still alive and striving' truth."

The Gisborne Herald garnered international coverage for the gaffe, which was published on Wednesday morning.

"'Characters first, superheroes next': Spike Lee dies at 95," the headline said, alongside a photo of Stan Lee.

More than 22,000 people have liked a tweet by Huw Turbervill that captured the error, which also saw it reported on by the likes of Time Magazine and the Huffington Post.

Gisborne Herald editor Jeremy Muir said the mistake was "really embarrassing", but was fine with people "having a bit of fun with it", according to Stuff.
